Our Personnel Inner Reserve – Resilience!

Resilience is an important element of Mental Well-being. Resilience refers to the idea of an individual’s tendency to cope with STRESS, CHANGE and ADVERSITY . We call this “bouncing back” to a state of “normal” functioning or even function better than expected.

Resilience implies that after an event, a person may not only be able to cope and recover, but also change to reflect different priorities from the (stressful, miserable) experience and prepare for the next stressful situation without getting mentally un-well.

In this workshop participants learn that Resilience (- INNER STRENGTH) is the most important defense people have against stress, failures, setbacks and losses (eg.: disasters, accidents, loss of loved ones etc.).

Can Resilience be learnt? Yes Yes Yes

Dementia – Disorder of the Brain

Guest Speaker Dr Wolff von Auer conducted a talk on Dementia at Health Promotion Board for a group of Health Ambassadors. These are all volunteers who are caring for older people with physical and mental issues. Theyare aware that It is important to improve public and professional understanding of one of the worst disorders i.e. Dementia (a word which comes from Latin and means irrationality) and enhance the quality of care and support provided to victims and their caregivers.

These Caregivers often are so busy caring for others that they tend to neglect their own emotional, physical and mental health. The demands on a caregiver’s body, mind and emotion can easily seem overwhelming, leading to fatigue and hopelessness – and ultimately to caregiver Stress or Burnout.

Dr Wolff von Auer discussed with the participants the following items:

  • What is Dementia (and Alzheimer)
  • What are the early signs?
  • What causes dementia?
  • How to help as a caregiver?
  • Any Treatment for Dementia?
  • Risk factors that can’t be changed – Risk factors that can be changed
  • What are the steps to help prevent caregiver stress/ burnout.
